About us
Unique creations, combining craftsmanship, design, and sustainability
Our Story
Our journey began in 2009, driven by a passion for natural fibers and the promotion of a unique craftsmanship. Over the years, we have refined our techniques and explored the richness of Madagascar’s handmade arts: basketry, embroidery, weaving, artisanal dyeing, and much more. Papaya was born, bringing this passion for authentic and sustainable craftsmanship to life. Since its inception, the brand has faced challenges with determination and creativity, while staying true to its values and commitment to people and the environment.
Our workshops in Antananarivo and Sainte-Marie are meeting places for talent and technique, where each creation is carefully conceived from start to finish: from selecting raw materials to the final piece, ensuring durable products full of authenticity.
A meeting of creativity and commitment
At the heart of this journey, Fifou embodies the visionary spirit of Papaya. Inseparable from the brand, he brings boldness and challenge, turning his many passions—from hospitality to environmental protection—into concrete and inspiring projects. His adventurous spirit unites the teams and instills the courage needed to bring our vision to life. For him, each creation carries the mark of a sincere, human, and sustainable endeavor.
Our values
The slow process
At Papaya, we believe that every creation deserves time and attention. Our production chain respects each contributor, from designer to artisan, and highlights traditional Malagasy techniques. We are committed to preserving this unique heritage by reinterpreting ancestral skills to make them contemporary and accessible.
Each piece is therefore the result of meticulous and respectful work, far from mass production, ensuring quality and authenticity.
Respect for the environment
We place environmental awareness at the heart of every decision we make. From the careful selection of raw materials to our collaborations with committed partners, every step of our production is designed to sustainably reduce our impact on the planet.
Our uniqueness lies in our full control of the supply chain: we cultivate our own raffia and develop our nurseries on Sainte-Marie Island, Madagascar. This close connection to the material from its origin allows us to ensure exemplary traceability, responsible management of natural resources, and respect for local ecosystems.
Solidarity and sharing
Papaya is above all a human adventure. We believe in the power of solidarity and the importance of passing on skills to new generations. Every project we undertake creates economic opportunities, strengthens the social fabric of communities, and allows artisans to share their expertise. Passing on these skills and this cultural heritage is, for us, an act of responsibility and pride.
Our commitments
We are committed to meeting the deadlines agreed with our clients. Reliability and transparency are at the core of our approach. We also commit to reducing our carbon footprint, ensuring traceability, and supporting the local economy.
A sustainable and supportive approach
At Papaya, we believe in fashion and décor that carry meaning: handmade creations as a mark of authenticity and quality, and natural fibers carefully selected for their durability and low environmental impact. Our creations are not only made in Madagascar—they are conceived, crafted, and valued there, within a framework of skill transfer and autonomy.
Papaya favors a short and transparent production chain: local sourcing, artisanal manufacturing in our workshop, minimal intermediaries, and fair compensation for artisans and producers. We prioritize sustainable trade and support traditional production sectors, thereby contributing to the preservation of Malagasy artisanal heritage.
Papaya is committed to ensuring successful professional reintegration for its collaborators. We work with local organizations to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds achieve their life projects. The company also supports women’s independence, providing opportunities to showcase their talent and creativity.
A unique value and economic impact
Building on its experience, our activities rely on expertise that captivates while generating favorable economic development : production creates a significant value chain, with direct and indirect benefits for local communities.
Papaya is BSCI-certified (Business Social Compliance Initiative), demonstrating a strong commitment to ethical and responsible practices. This certification ensures that our working conditions respect workers’ rights, safety, health, and fair compensation throughout our entire production chain.
